Competitive Rowing Help.................................................................?

Hi, so i need to know of a book that has tips / guide to becoming a competitive rower. Here is my goal; I want to get on to my University's rowing team. I have exactly 11 months to train. I have never rowed before and just want to be part of a athletic team before i finish off university. I am originally a cross country runner however I've decided to give rowing a try because it involves more upper body and that is the week point in my body. Any suggestion will be helpful. Cant afford a coach so will need to stick to books.

i do agree with the oxford guy that answered first but i also like a book called Rowing Faster by Volker Nolte. it gives a lot of great tips on workouts, dieting, and technique. though books will only help a little. i highly doubt you can be a walk on at a university rowing team without previous rowing experience but good luck to you anyway. hope you make the university team.
