Valerie Bertinelli, then: bubbly sitcom star and America's Sweetheart turned tabloid headline and rock star wife. Now: actress, single working mother of teenage rock star, and weight-loss inspiration to millions. We all knew and loved Valerie Bertinelli years ago when she played girl-next-door cutie Barbara Cooper in the hit TV show One Day at a Time , and then starred in numerous TV movies. From wholesome primetime in America's living rooms, Valerie moved to late nights with the hardest-partying band of the decadent eighties when she became, at twenty, wife to rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Losing It is Valerie's frank account of her life backstage and in the spotlight. Here are the ups and downs of teen stardom, of her complicated marriage to a brilliant, tormented musical genius, and of her very public struggle with her weight. Surprising, uplifting, and empowering, Losing It takes you behind the scenes of Valerie's acting career and marriage, recalling the comforts, friendships, and problems of her television family, her close relationships with her parents and brothers, the stress and worries of being the wife of a rock star, and the joys of motherhood. Like many women, Valerie often remembers the state of her life by the food she ate and the numbers on her scale. So despite her celebrity, Valerie's voice is so down-to-earth, honest, and appealing that you'll feel as if you're talking with a girlfriend over coffee. Funny and candid, Valerie recounts her attempts to maintain a healthy self-image while dealing with social pressures to look and act a certain way, and to overcome career insecurities and relationship problems, all of which will be familiar to the hundreds of thousands of women who struggle every day with these same issues. From marital turmoil to the joys of a new career, from being named among Penthouse 's ten sexiest women in the world to overhearing whispers about her weight gain in the grocery store, this is Valerie's inspiring journey as she finds new love, raises a terrific kid, and motivates other women as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig.

Losing Weight At The Gym

You Will NOT Lose Weight At The Gym!

I'm going to start off by saying ok you obviously can lose weight at the gym. It's what there designed for right. What I mean is you might not lose as much weight as you want, or you might come to a dead end.

What do I mean by a dead end ? I mean your have that first initial stage where the weight will seem to be dropping off, and all of a sudden it will stop, Or you may have even gained weight.

I put this down to a couple of things. Boredom being the first of those follwed by lack of motivation and enthusiasm. Think about it your going to the gym doing the same routine day after day, week after week you are eventually going to get bored of this. Then that boredom is going to lead to no motivation, you end up feeling like you don't want to be there.

This in my opinion is why people end up quitting the gym. Now im not saying you need to quit the gym to lose weight, not at all. What i'm saying you need to do is not be afraid to change things.

So what can you change ?

To start off simply you could do your normal gym routine in reverse. Even something as simple as this can really beat the boredom and get that all important motivation. So this would be changing the sequence and it's not the only way you can do it. Play around with to create different routines.

Other things you can change could be, exercise grouping, exercise type, exercises per workout, amount of resistance, base of stability, rest periods between sets, etc.

I think the way to get the best results keep your motivation high and boredom low is to change your workout say every 4 - 8 weeks. After this time your body will be used to the workout and lose effectiveness.

Losing weight out of the gym ?

This may be a wierd concept to some people but believe me it's possible. There is so much you can do out and about to burn of that unwanted belly. Plus I think being outside is a real motivation booster where the scenery actually changes!

Here's a few things you can do -

  • Mountain Biking
  • Hill Sprints
  • Jogging (Stop & Go)
  • Step Training
  • 100m Sprints
  • Swimming (In the Sea)

These are such great ways of exercising, ways I think are fun. Which is what exercising is supposed to be about. If your not having fun then your not going to have the motivation to lose weight. Simple!

So mix up your gym routine with the different techniques, get outside and exercise and don't give up!

Losing Weight At The Gym Questions

Am I not losing weight at the gym because I stopped smoking?

I stopped smoking in November 2009, and started the gym. I attend two intensive cardio workout hourly sessions and 2 gym sessions per week. I eat 6 days healthy and eat what I like one day per week. I have to admit my body is toning - but no weight loss. Therefore, would you say it is because I stopped smoking (I used to smoke 3-10 cigs per day).

I'd say it's because you're losing body fat but gaining muscle mass. Muscle is much more dense than fat. I remember back in high school there were girls who joined cross country in an attempt to lose weight, but after a couple weeks they realized they gained weight instead.

Don't worry about this, you're totally fine. And congrats on quitting smoking.

@jari: smoking, in fact, DOES have something to do with weight loss. Yes, it's calories consumed and calories burned, but smoking increases the "calories burned" count. You seem to have forgotten about that. It's a simple calculation...

Best piece of equipment to lose weight at home?

I want to buy a piece of gym equipment to lose some weight and get fit at home, because going to a gym doesn't fit in with my schedule, but I was wondering what is the best piece of equipment to get?

I'm deciding between a cross trainer, exercise bike, or treadmill. Or is there anything else you think I should get?

Honestly, you're not gonna like this cuz you're a dude (though it's actually getting bigger with dudes these days), but the core ball is the best. It's cheap and it's fantastic. It works really well for me.
