Finding It

Finding It

$10.9

Welcome back to chez Bertinelli, where life is as crazy and comical as ever. In revealing talks with her longtime boyfriend, Tom, Valerie gets even more personal about her inner worries: her maternal anxieties about her son, Wolfie (he’s fallen in love and, as she writes, "getting your sex talk from Eddie Van Halen wasn’t recommended in any of the parenting books I read"); the challenges of dealing with a blended family; her mother’s own new diet adventure; and a craving for a deeper relationship with a Higher Power ("I have experienced days of inner peace and connectedness with a larger spirit—twice," she writes. "Why not more often?"). And as if these everyday challenges weren’t enough, Valerie is working to maintain her own very public weight loss and approaching her fiftieth birthday. This is the story of what happens after you change your life. And it’s not all peaches and cream, or even low-fat yogurt. This inspiring memoir, from the beloved actress and author of the bestseller Losing It, is an optimistic story for trying times. Warm and friendly, honest and self-aware—with the same winning wit and candor that touched a generation of fans in Losing It — Finding It is about working on all the reasons we gain weight in the first place so that it doesn’t happen again. It’s about becoming better, not just thinner. And it’s about believing in love and happiness, having faith that both are possible, and finding out that God does want you to enjoy life’s desserts—even when you’re on a diet.

Finding Your Right Weight

When starting out exercising with weights the question you need to ask yourself is 'how heavy/light do I need to go?' I know I came across this dilemma myself. The size you use is ultimately up to you, but if you find yourself constantly straining whilst doing an exercise then consider using a lighter weight and then build up from there.

Here are my five 'top tips' to help you with this.

  1. Grunting. Groaning, grumbling in the middles of an exercise means that you are using a weight that is too heavy. Change down to a lighter weigh and build up to a heavier weight in time. Do not be concerned about this when starting out we all have to start from somewhere.
  2. Holding your breath. When lifting weights you need to condition your breathing so that you are inhaling and exhaling at an even smooth pace. This can take some practice but it comes as second nature once you have practiced this for some time. Holding your breath is a sure sign that you are straining to do the exercise at hand.
  3. Throwing your body. You may find yourself lunging or moving your body into a bad posture to lift a weight. By doing this you are relying on your bodyweight to give you the momentum to actually lift the weight rather than your muscles. Change the weight down if you find yourself in this position. You could easily do yourself an injury by throwing your body around. Make sure you start with a weight you are comfortable with.
  4. Shaking limbs. If your arm starts shaking uncontrollably during a bicep curl for example, you are working that bicep too hard. You need to drop the weight down otherwise what you will find that for a few days after your 'bicep' will be very cramped indeed.
  5. Tiring quickly. If you find yourself halfway through your workout exhausted then your body is telling you that you may have been a bit too overambitious where the heaviness of the weight was concerned.

From the opposite side of the scale knowing if the weights you are lifting are too light is easy. If you are not working your muscles hard enough then switch up from 1-3 pounds to 3-5 pounds.

Try an experiment trying to find the right weight that engages you within a workout session is often a very fine balancing act.

Finding Your Right Weight Questions

when's the best time to check your weight?

i read in a magazine that your weight can shift a lot after say, drinking a bottle of water, eating, exercising. Sometimes when i check my weight, i'll be one number then right after exercising, it seems like i lost 4lbs! even though that's not really possible, so when's the best time to find out what my ACTUAL weight is?! and does anyone have any health tips?! (except for eating healthy, drinking water and exercising?!)

I always weigh first thing in the morning on Sunday mornings. ... Well, fourth thing. I always use the bathroom, brush my teeth, and get down to just a t-shirt and my underwear before weighing. ... This is the time of day when you won't have eating and drinking counting against you. And it is always good to weigh in the same clothes (or nothing if you prefer). You don't want to suddenly gain 3 pounds one morning just because you have on your cozy fluffy pajamas.

I got a lot of great tips at www.tbfinc.com . Unfortunately, their free membership offer is over. Several of the tips could be considered "common sense" ... stuff like not to eat stuff with a lot of sugar or calories. Other tips that were new ideas to me included to do your workout before a meal instead of after, like in the mornings before breakfast. If you work out too soon after eating, you are only using up what you just put into your body. Work out a while before meal time, and your body will use what it already had stored from previous meals. Another was to eat until you are just satisfied - not full. Your stomach will get smaller and it will take less food to fill it.

Of course, I am guessing that you have already heard that it is best to eat several small meals throughout the day. And there will always be those fads like the no carb diets. I believe in the "everything in moderation" theory. Everything can be good or bad for you depending on how much you eat.

I have had some successful dieting ventures in my days. I need to work out a new plan though because my old ones don't work with my current school and work schedules. Still, they may help you. Here are some things I was doing at a time when I was loosing 2-5 pounds a week:

Choose a time a few hours before bed time. After that time, allow yourself only healthy foods. For example, after 4pm I would only allow myself about 2 ounces of lean meat, one piece of fresh fruit, and all the vegetables I wanted. I tried to just eat vegetables, but if I simply wasn't in the mood I would allow myself fruit or meat. I also only allowed myself to drink water after this time. ... If I really needed something with some flavor in it, I would squeeze the juice of a lemon into my water or make some tea.

And if I had a craving for junk food after lunch time, I would try to wait and see if it passed. If in the morning I still had a strong craving for junk food, I would have it with my breakfast the next morning. (I can't tell you how many times I started the day with a chocolate cupcake, peanut butter, and a cup of milk and still lost weight!) I could usually keep the cravings for junk food down by making sure I had something sweet in the day. Most mornings I would have strawberry banana juice, a banana shake, or pancakes with light syrup for breakfast. (tip: I made my banana shakes by letting bananas get VERY ripe, freezing them, then putting them in the blender with low-fat milk. It was usually naturally sweet enough that I didn't need much, if any sugar. ... Bananas that weren't so ripe required a lot of sugar.)

There are some other things that I think are good tips even though I have gotten a lot of negative responses from others. One of them is to keep a few packs of gum handy... minty, cinnamon, and something sweet. It seems like chewing a piece of gum sometimes cuts back on cravings when it isn't a good time for me to eat. And you probably also already know about stuff like getting enough sleep, brushing your teeth, bathing on a daily basis, etc... (hey, you asked for health tips!) And don't forget to get some fresh air and sunshine on a daily basis (or as close to it as the weather will permit)

I hope this helps some.

Where can I buy on line, or get directions on line to make, garment dress clips?

I need to make, or buy, some of those clips. They are used to attach to your clothing, if you need to tighten it up some or gather some loose material. I don't want the ones that are made like broaches, but the kind that have elastic in the middle, and metal clips on each end. Kind of like the clips used on suspenders. I found some plain white ones, but I need some that are more colorful. I am losing weight and I do not want to buy any new dresses right away, and I thought they would be a nice way to make my dress look less sloppy, between sizes.
If you go to http://whiteelegance.com/ and search under accessories, and look for dress clip, they show 3 examples of the type of thing I am looking for,

You could always buy those plain white ones just for the clips and put your own material in between, also look at joannes or your local craft store for those clips, im sure they have them. But honestly I think the look your going to get with them is going to be really really tacky and your better off buying a couple dresses from somewhere cheap like forever 21 or target in between sizes.
