The Schwinn Airdyne Upright Exercise Bike Still Is A Top Seller
The Schwinn AirDyne upright exercise bike remains virtually unmodified after being on the market for nearly 30 years. In spite of several limitations the machine continues to be a popular choice with something of a fan club of users even though the design is about 30 years old. Basic benefits of the machine include the simplicity of design and construction, the dual action workout and the air resistance design. Here are why these essential benefits are of advantage and importance to so many owners, whether at home or in gyms and clubs.
Firstly, the manufacture and design of the Airdyne Ergometer, as it's regularly referred to, is of quite heavy duty nature. Weighing in at about 100 pounds, this is an apparatus that can be hammered on hard with little or no resulting swaying and rolling. You may have experienced what happens when lesser bikes are used for serious pedaling. Light stationary bikes tend to move under stress resulting in a shaky ride that certainly does not inspire hard use. On the contrary, hard use of many exercise bicycles is a bit of a scary experience since a come-apart seems possible. Plus swaying and rocking of a bike usually leads to loosened fasteners and even cracked joints and eventual failure. None of this is a worry with the Airdyne. The construction is long-lived and confidence inspiring encouraging hard work and faster results. As for the results, here's where the design helps with fitness too.
The original dual action bike, the Schwinn Airdyne bike by design works both upper body muscle groups as well as the major muscles of the lower body, especially legs. By working all major muscle groups, the resulting workout provides a more balanced exercise and also even encourages some stretching and bending motions as well, but all done in a non-stressful way that even works in a rehabilitation setting. In addition, working all the muscle groups builds strength too as it works the cardio system at the rider pace. By building strength, the natural result is an increase in the basal, or at-rest metabolism, which is the real key to long-term weight loss and increased fat burning. These benefits all result partly from the simple resistance system used by the Airdyne classic as well as by the newer and similar Schwinn Airdyne Evolution Comp exercise bike.
Central to the manner the Airdyne works is the fan resistance technique. Unlike friction resistance or magnetic resistance bicycles, the bikes establish the loads by merely turning a fan. The faster the fan goes, the higher the pedaling load and the more work the rider does. It's simple to match the load to your desired effort level and it all is smooth and infinitely variable as well. Unlike friction resistance bikes, the system has nothing to wear out. Unlike magnetic resistance systems there is no electronics in the fan design to fail and lead to a bike that is no longer useful.
A durable bike that's easy to use and comfortable to ride will more likely get used which of course is the only way it does any good anyway. With the dual action design in the Schwinn Airdyne upright exercise bike, the rider gets a more balanced workout that gets at all the main muscle groups resulting in better fitness results as well as improvements in the ability of the body to burn fat. Gym Ergometer Questions
Summer workout for cross country?
I just finished the crew season (rowing) and am in good shape. I ran the mile in gym in 6:45 and rowed 2000 meters on the ergometer in 8:10. I've never been on a xc/track team before and don't want to be way behind when I start in the fall, so if anyone has a workout schedule that will allow me to maintain/improve my in-shapeness (is that a word?) over the summer that would be great.
@total-
a) actually, my school's kinda ghetto
b) my family is not exactly what you would call "affluent"
c) to make such assumtions solely based off the fact that I am on a crew team means that you are either stupid or a great big douche-bag.
I do quite a bit of interval training. The best one I like is:-
key m = minute and SS = steady state run
5 m warm up.
1 m hard
1 m ss
1m hard
1 m ss
1m hard
1m ss
2m hard
2m ss
2m hard
2m ss
3m hard
3m ss
2m hard
2m ss
2m hard
2m ss
1m hard
1m ss
1m hard
1m ss
1m hard
5m warm down
It takes 43 minutes altogether. Also do not forget to have a few minutes to get warm and then stretch.
I also like to do stairs, near where I live is a toboggan hill with 51 steps and I sprint up them a jog down alongside them 10 times, that gets the heartbeat going. I do that about 1 a week.
I also mix in steady state long runs (5 to 12 km) and short fast runs (3 km ish)
