Walking is a great cardio workout, and is much kinder to your body than jogging or running. Many factors will determine how many calories you burn on that stroll. In most instances, a good calorie calculator can help you determine just that. Here are some of the things that will determine calories expended on the walk:

Age: The bad news is that our metabolism does slow down as we get older. A person in their twenties will burn more calories than a similar size/weight person in their forties. The good news is that it doesn't have to stay that way.

Gender: It may not play a large role, but there are differences between the genders that determine calories and body fat. Women need to carry more body fat than men, and how it is metabolized is also somewhat different.

Length of time/distance: This one is easy to see. Naturally, the longer you perform an exercise, the more calories you burn.

Speed: The faster the pace, the more burned. It is very true that running burns more, but walking is a safer course, especially if it involves concrete sidewalks.

Terrain: Walking up and down hilly streets or on an incline exercise machine uses more energy and thus the body burns its fuel faster.

Weight: Even a few pounds makes a big difference. I've been known to carry weights when walking just to get the same fat burning from a previous, heavier weight. Use caution, though. The weights should be evenly distributed or an injury could occur.

If you exercise in the morning, you will have two benefits. The first is an increase in energy levels during the day. That is one reason why it is not recommended that you exercise within four hours of bedtime. It could keep you awake. The second benefit is that it boosts your metabolism for the entire day. Everything you do afterwards from breathing to sleeping will be at a higher level. How much so depends on both the intensity and duration of your physical activity.

There is one other piece to this puzzle; finding out how many calories you have burned. To do that, you will need one of the many calculators available on-line. Look for one that has a comprehensive list of activities, an equally comprehensive list of foods and beverages and takes into account all of the above mentioned parts of the equation. This should give you a fairly good idea of what you have burned and consumed.

If you are just beginning an exercise program, it's a good idea to see your doctor. He or she can give you advice on what exercises are best for you and how to avoid injury. You may also want to see a shoe specialist, to make sure your footwear will protect not just your feet, but all of the joints involved in movement.

Healthy Weight Calculator For Men Questions

how much to be skinny?

hi, let me start from the beggining, when i was 14 i was obese at about 6ft i weighed 320lbs, i started excersising on n off n ate healthy, now im 16 and weigh 225lbs, but i still have those awful love handles and man boobs, I was wondering aboout how much should i weigh to be actually "Healthy" a good weight that ive seen on a BMI calculator for me (6ft 6in @ 16) is 190lbs, but i want to know if i'll be able to fit in a Medium shirt...its been hard for me all these years to have to wear a shirt constantly in the beach, esspecially in Miami. So I was wonderin if you know some one whos my height and is "fit" how much do they weigh, if not, how much more weight do you believe I should weigh? either way im proud of myself losing 90+lbs on self motivation :)

Congrats on losing 90 pounds, that's great. 190 sounds healthy for your height, but it really depends on your build.

My husband is 6'1" and in his teens he weighed about 175, he has a lean swimmer's build. He's in his late twenties now, and while he's still lean he's filled out quite a bit and put on some more muscle so now he's 190.

Just take it one day at a time. If you get down to 190 and feel like you have more to lose, worry about it then.
