WHO Child Growth Standards - Length/Height-for-age, Weight-for-age, Weight-for-length, Weight-for-height and Body Mass Index-for age

$45

A comprehensive review of the uses and interpretation of anthropometric references undertaken by WHO in the early 1990s concluded that new growth curves were needed to replace the existing international reference. To develop new standards, a multi-country study was carried out to collect primary growth data and related information from 8440 healthy breastfed infants and young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings (Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, Oman and the USA). The first set of growth standards (length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, weight-for-height and body mass index-for-age) are presented in this report. The curves represent the best description of physiological growth for children under five years of age. The standards depict normal early childhood growth under optimal environmental conditions and can be used to assess children everywhere, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status and type of feeding. This report will be useful to paediatricians and other healthcare providers, nutritionists, policy makers, researchers, national institutes of health, schools of medicine, and professional associations.

Weight was so searingly fantastic that it completely overwhelmed my palate & [A] little piece of genius, Weight & is her best book yet. --Bethany Schneider, NewsdayWith wit and verve, the prize-winning author of Sexing the Cherry and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit brings the mythical figure of Atlas into the space age and sets him free at last. In her retelling of the story of a god tricked into holding the world on his shoulders and his brief reprieve, she sets difficult questions about the nature of choice and coercion, how we choose our own destiny and at the same time can liberate ourselves from our seeming fate. Finally in paperback, Weight is a daring, seductive addition to Canongate's ambitious series of myths by the world's most acclaimed authors.

The question of the ideal weight to height ratio is a very popular question. So many people are concerned with their weight in this day and age. As health problems seem to be on the rise and new ones are discovered all the time, staying healthy should be a goal for everyone. We all want to reach that ideal height and weight ratio as a part of staying healthy and, of course, looking good too. When we are at a healthy weight, we are overall healthier and happier people.

There are several things to take into consideration when trying to figure out if your weight is good for your height. Your age, sex and body build are all things to take into consideration. There is no exact science to figuring out your weight to height ratio. There is however a way to get a figure that will give you an approximate range.

Figuring out your BMI will give you that approximate range. BMI stands for "body mass index" which will help you determine if your height and weight are good together. There are a couple ways to figure this out. The simplest formula is as follows:

BMI = ( Weight in Pounds / ( Height in inches ) x ( Height in inches ) ) x 703

If you prefer to figure this in metric you can use this formula:

BMI = Weight (Kg) / Height (Meters) x Height (Meters)

Don't like doing math? You can find BMI calculators online that you just need to input the fields and it will do the math for you.

If you are at 18.5 or less then you are considered to be underweight but at 8.5 to 24.99 you're weight is normal. It your total hits 25 to 29.99 then you are a bit overweight and should probably consider losing a few pounds. For 30 to 39.99 you are considered obese and should defiantly lose some weight for health issues. A total of 40 or higher means that you are morbidly obese and you should start changing you're eating and exercise habits very soon for many health reasons.

Remember this is just an estimate as the other factors such as age and body build are not a part of this equation. The number you get from this formula will give you a good estimate of what you should be at though and it will give you an idea if you need to consider losing some weight or not.

If you do find that you need or desire to lose some weight so you can get closer to your idea ratio, you have lots of options. But my favorite of these is Medifast because it works quickly and for the most part you don't have to spend too much time thinking about what to eat. Height And Weight And Age Chart Questions

Is there a chart for running that shows speed & distance standards with the variables of age, weight & height?

When I was in high school there was this weight lifting chart categorized for weight and age. And I just thought there has to be one for running.

Basically I want to see a chart that shows what is slow, medium, and fast for the variables that I listed in the question title.
For example: the expectations of a heavier or bigger runner would be less than a short lean runner. Smaller people have a better VO2 Max as their body needs less oxygen.

Not that I know of, but check out runnersworld.com they might have something like that. The problem is, I don't know that there are "standards" for the variables you listed. Speed over distance does not always, or even usually depend on those variables.

Asker states:

"For example: the expectations of a heavier or bigger runner would be less than a short lean runner. Smaller people have a better VO2 Max as their body needs less oxygen."

Not exactly. VO2Max is the maximum amount of oxygen, in ml, that one can use in one minute per kg of body weight. It has less to do with how much oxygen the body needs, and more to do with how much the body can utilize. It is very possible for a bigger runner to have a better VO2Max then a smaller runner. Generally bigger people have bigger lungs thus larger oxygen uptake, but this does not mean they can use all that oxygen they are breathing in.

There are also other factors to consider. Taller (heavier) runners with longer legs need less steps to cover the same distance as shorter (lighter) runners, so there oxygen needs may be less.
