The Overweight Patient

The Overweight Patient

$29.95

This practical guide approaches obesity and overeating from a psychological perspective, and offers sensitive methods to increase patients’ sense of self-worth, self-knowledge, and motivation to lose weight. The Overweight Patient explores the underlying beliefs and behaviours that may contribute to obesity, including psychological needs, addiction, fear of deprivation, parental influences and sexual fears. Kathy Leach draws a useful distinction between the need to eat and the need to maintain a large body size, and addresses the reasons for both long-term obesity and short-term weight gain. She provides a clear and accessible introduction to the psychoanalytic theory of Transactional Analysis and details how this approach can be used with overweight people. Illustrated with patient histories, exercises and worked examples of techniques, this book enables therapists and health practitioners to help obese people come to terms with their size, or to support their decision to change their behaviour and reduce their need to eat.

The United States is facing a health crisis of epidemic proportions: children are gaining weight younger and faster than ever before. With the prospect of becoming the most obese generation of adults in history, they are already turning up with an alarming assortment of "grown-up" maladies, from type 2 diabetes to high blood pressure. This book takes a clear-eyed look at what's behind the statistics and diagnoses, and what can be done about the major health crisis among American children. Sharron Dalton begins with the basics: what obesity is, what causes it, and why it matters. Integrating information from scientific and popular sources, she reviews past remedies and their results and compares specific strategies and programs for children. When a third of our children are overweight or likely to become so, it's everyone's problemand this book argues for a united approach, promoting the role of parents, health professionals, and school and community leaders. For each group, Dalton outlines actions to combat the epidemic. She suggests ways for parents to respond to their children in interactions centered on food and physical activities. And she illuminates a number of issues raised by childhood obesity, from the pain of fat discrimination to the economic, social, and political ramifications of an epidemic of obesity among the young. At once authoritative and nontechnical, no-nonsense and compassionate, Our Overweight Children is a clear call to actiona prescription for treating the most dire problem threatening our children's health and our nation's future. Understanding BMI and Xenical for better weight loss

Weight loss or slimming is not a cosmetic term anymore. Because of the growing incidence of weight-related health problems, everyone is taking it seriously and working on fat reduction. Regular exercise and a healthy eating habit can help you stay fit. Weight loss pills can also help you in many ways to reduce excess fat in the body. But the question is when should you seriously start thinking about fat reduction?

Understanding body mass index (BMI)

Body mass index is one of the primary indicators of overweight or obese conditions. An individual with a healthy BMI can dodge many potential health problems, including arthritis and heart conditions. It is a simple measurement which helps doctors determine if their patients need to work on losing or gaining weight.

A man of 6'5'' with a body weight of 200 pounds does not appear to be overweight or obese, but a man of 5'8" with the same body weight does look large. This is because a person's height plays an important role in determining the condition of his body weight. The body mass index score takes into account both height and weight.

BMI = mass (lb) x 703/(height (inches))2

If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, you are overweight and need to work on reducing body fats. But if your BMI is 30 or more, you are obese and should seek medical advice. Also remember that a low BMI is not a sign of respite either. People with BMI scores around 18 are considered to be underweight and are prone to develop many health conditions because of malnutrition.

Planning weight loss with Xenical orlistat

Once you know your BMI, it becomes easier to plan the next steps. If treatment is necessary, you can try out Xenical orlistat. It is a prescription slimming pill recommended for treating overweight or obese conditions. This medicine works on the fat you consume through food and blocks one-third of it from being digested. For best results, you should take Xenical after each meal. But try to avoid high-calorie meals when you are on the orlistat therapy. Also, do not expect the medicine to work like magic. It may take up to 3 months to find out noticeable reduction in your body weight, provided you follow your doctor's advice.

Xenical and body mass index

Even though a BMI score of 25 is a sign of being overweight, Xenical should not be taken unless it is 27 or more. So if your BMI is 25.9, you should try to reduce your weight without the help of orlistat. Talk to your doctor for more expert advice.

Why Xenical?

The medicine can be taken with other health conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or heart problems. Another unique thing about Xenical is that it does not restrict your eating options. You can eat anything you wish, as long as the food is not very high on calorie.

Talking to the doctor

Consultation with your doctor is the most important part of your weight loss regime with Xenical. Your doctor will prescribe the drug only if it is an appropriate weight loss program for you. So you need to provide the details of your present and past health conditions, along with the details of your daily diet and expectations from Xenical.

Height And Weight Overweight Questions

Considering this height and weight, is this heavy set, overweight?

Okay, well my mom says i'm overweight but everyone else says i'm fine. that i'm average. okay, well i'm 5 foot 61/2 inches. and i weight bout 160 lbs. Is that? overweight considering my height? if it is, do you have any suggestions on how to lose a few pounds> because i've tried everything

depends on how it works for you. statistically, you probably are. if you,re happy and comfortable; don,t sweat it. i,m 5'10". at a weight of 179, i was .1 point into obesity, based on my BMI. i felt great. looked good. my "normal" weight should have been 165. i would have been a stick at that weight.

Urgent weight loss help needed!?

I'm 13 and about 5 foot 1 tall and I'm overweight. I've read in loads of places that a girl of my age and height should weigh between 7-8 stone and i weigh more. Every time i try dieting and exercising I stray off especially because mum doesn't buy low fat food and stuff i need to diet even when i keep telling her. How can I make myself stick to it and get mum to take it seriously? I hate being overweight i'm fatter than all my friends and it makes me really self conscious. How can i lose the weight quickly? Please no rude or unhelpful comments i really need the help thank you.

Listen to me, you are fine... you are 13 and still developing. My please don't worry about this stuff now. You'll have plenty of time to do that later in life.

If your mom doesn't provide healthy food then just eat everything in small portions. Drink water not soda. Make sure you do something active for 30 minutes a day. Hang out with your friends outside. run around, walk places, ride your bike.

I know it's hard to be confident around your friends when you feel like they look better than you... but they are your friends, they don't care how you look, they love you.. And I promise you, you are beautiful no matter what your weight is. You're still growing, things will get better as you get older. Just make good, healthy food choices and be as active as possible.

Just tell your mom that you want to eat healthy and get the rest of the family healthy by buying healthy foods like fruit and vegetables. If they are too expensive tell her that you don't need any sugary drinks and you're just going to drink water and milk so you can use the money you save on that to buy fruits and veggies.

I hope this helps.

I really hope you stop worrying about this stuff at your age. I know it's hard, but just try to love your body. These are the years you will look back on and realize that it was so much easier back then. Live it up and be as happy as you can be. I know you can do it.
:)
Good luck.
