my english bulldog weighs 22.6 lbs and hes 14 weeks old on tuesday....?
We are feeding him the recommended amount of food (we feed him Orijen) and we dont give him table scraps or anything.. maybe a special bone every couple of days but still...
I looked on the bulldog weight charts online and they said the ideal weight for him at this age is around 16lbs.
We just weighed him tonight and had no idea he weighed this much.
what do you think?
I just wanted to add that we take him for 2 half hour walks a day.
Our vet recommended Orijen for our puppy. I have heard that the protein is good for then at this young age but once they are one year old to change the food to a diet lower in protein.
I can feel his ribcage easily.. are we just going to have a large bulldog?
If you run your hand down his side, can you feel his ribs easily??? If not, he is overweight.
Orijen is a good food but it is extremely high in protein. It may be that it is too high for your dog. Explore other options with your local pet food store. Since I don't know where you live, I cannot make recommendations on food.
Rule of thumb...bulldogs tend to very easily get obese. I am a professional groomer and I see so many that are overweight.
2 half hour walks per day is good but is there any other exercise? Do you play fetch with him? Do you have a backyard where you can do so?
Bulldogs for the most part are a very "laid back" breed so they don't require the same type of high evergy and protein food as (for instance) a Border Collie who is always on the go.
The feeding guide in the back of ANY dog food in a general guideline. I find that MOST foods recommend a greater amount than the dog requires. I have had sales reps tell me (I manage a pet food store part time) that they will test their food on 100 dogs. If one loses weight, they "up" the amount of the recommended daily feeding on the bags.
Every dog is different. Bulldogs don't metabolize their food the same way more active dogs do. They actually should be fed less than the label says.

Rule of thumb - you don't want to see ribs sticking out but if you cannot (without applying pressure) fel the ribs when you run your hands down his sides, you need to cut back. You can actually feel a layer of "fat" between the bone and the skin if you know what you are looking for. If you don't, ask the vet...they can tell you how to "feel" for the ribs...also, if your local pet store has trained personnel, they may be able to help also.
