Machine Stitch $38.99 Machine Embroidery is hugely exciting in terms of its potential as a creative medium and is part of a flourishing creative industry both in design and production. MMU hosts a specialist embroidery department, which has been instrumental in artistic and educational innovations in this area since the 1960s. The lecturers, graduates and students have remarkable expertise in machine embroidery, and MMU is home to a rich and unique archive of machines, samples and artwork, both historical and contemporary. This book will celebrate this archive, as well as providing the only definitive record (and exploring the potential) of the huge number of machines currently in use from the traditional Irish Embroidery machine to the new generation of computerised sewing machines. The book will demonstrate how key machines can be applied to the artistic, industrial and domestic markets, and shows machine embroiderers how to combine techniques and develop their ideas using machine embroidery. Each contributor gives their own individual perspective on machine stitch. |

Machine Learning $179 Machine Learning - Modeling Data Locally and Globally presents a novel and unified theory that tries to seamlessly integrate different algorithms. Specifically, the book distinguishes the inner nature of machine learning algorithms as either "local learning"or "global learning."This theory not only connects previous machine learning methods, or serves as roadmap in various models, but a" more importantly a" it also motivates a theory that can learn from data both locally and globally. This would help the researchers gain a deeper insight and comprehensive understanding of the techniques in this field. The book reviews current topics, new theories and applications. Kaizhu Huang was a researcher at the Fujitsu Research and Development Center and is currently a research fellow in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Haiqin Yang leads the image processing group at HiSilicon Technologies. Irwin King and Michael R. Lyu are professors at the Computer Science and Engineering department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. |

The Steve Machine $14.95 Auden flees the small town of Capreol for Toronto, bewildered, HIV positive, and in search of an entirely new personality. He falls in love with orgy maestro Wrik, mainly because the old Auden would never even have talked to him. And through Wrik, he meets Steve Reinke, his new best friend. Steve – and here’s where it gets confusing – is, in real life as well as in The Steve Machine , a renowned video artist, someone who makes television for one person at a time, small-screen excursions designed to cure arthritis or night blindness. Despite being a virtuoso with video, however, Steve is not so good with love. He falls for a football star, and, with his medium-is-the-message videotapes, is able to slow down the other players so his beau can run past them all at normal speed. Though the team wins, Steve does not, and the jock dumps him. Then there’s the chess whiz, followed soon after by hustlers and tattoo artists, and and then Jody, who’s got a mouth so big and red that Steve is overcome with lust. Truth is, it’s a mouth used to settling scores, only Steve doesn’t catch this. Blinded by passion, our fictional Steve contracts HIV, then sets to work building a videotape that will relieve him, and the millions of others afflicted, of their illness. On the way, he stars in a reality TV show, decides to wear only white paper suits, and meets childhood idol Yoko Ono. Auden accompanies Steve in this quest that is at once a plague narrative, a love story, a reflection on media technology, and a joy to read. As an added bonus, this volume has been written both as a regular hold-in-your-hand novel with a beginning, middle, and end (though not necessarily in that order), and as a machine designed to replace the voice of the inner monologue with something (or someone) far more soothing and satisfying. Like the videotapes of Steve Reinke, the book itself is a machine. The Steve Machine . |

Spiral coil binding is a great way to preserve older books whose bindings are falling apart. Here are a few tips to get you started.
The Equipment
If you have a fair amount of books that you want to rebind to spiral coil, the first thing you will have to look into is purchasing a binding machine. There are a number of features to look for when you are shopping around for a coil binding machine. The first item you want to consider is the "pitch" of a given machine. Pitch refers to the number of holes there are per inch. 4:1 is by far the most common pitch, and just for the sake of simplicity and ease of finding supplies, the one you should probably go with. If you already have, or have access to a machine that has a pitch of 3:1 or 5:1, that is fine too, you just may have a little bit harder time locating the correct size of coil. There are also plenty of machines out there that have what are called "disengageable dies" and can punch holes in all three patterns.
Punching capacity is another feature to look for in a spiral coil binding machine. There are several inexpensive manual machines that can do a fair job with 10-12 pages at a time, and depending on the volume you are working with and the amount of time you are willing to spend, this may be plenty. If you are looking for more power per punch, there are manual machines with larger capacities, as well as machines with electric punches.
Some machines also come with electric coil inserters, while the with the less expensive ones, you will have to insert the coil by hand. Again, this just depends on the time and money you want to spend.
The Project
First, of course, you have to remove the current binding of your book. For the purposes of this tutorial, we are going to assume that your book was bound without holes before, perhaps in a hard or softcover, and that the binding is now failing. To remove what is left of the binding, use scissors or a razor to carefully remove as much of the old glue as you can. Small amounts of heat can be used as well in order to melt and remove some of the adhesive, but you will need to be very careful not to damage the pages. Just keep working at it until you have loose pages with no glue on them.
Take a number of pages that matches your machine's capacity and insert them into the binding machine, making sure they are properly jogged and straight.
Punch your holes, and keep you pages in the proper order.
With all of your pages and you cover together, start to wind your coil through the holes. Then let the coil inserter take over (if you have one) by applying a slight pressure to the coil as the rollers spin the wire through the holes. When all the holes have been threaded, stop the machine.
Crimp the ends of the coil with the special crimping pliers. If you don't have any, get some right away, as these are the only way to make sure that your binding stays in place.

Machine Book Only Questions
I am thinking of starting quilting as a hobby and need to buy my first sewing machine......??
Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be a good machine for a beginner? I have read a few books on the subject and they all say a fancy machine is not necessary, just one with a good straight forward and back stitch. I am interested in machine quilting only and live in Australia. Thanks!
I should probably add that I have experience sewing clothes, pillows, costumes, etc, but not quilts.
Any decent machine will work for quilting. As you've been told, all you really need is a straight stitch for piecing. However, it is a lot easier to maintain accurate seam allowances if you have a quarter inch foot, which isn't always standard. It is also helpful to have a walking foot (for straight line quilting) and an open toe darning or free motion foot (for free motion quilting). You might want to add a "needle down" function to your wish list. This means that when you stop sewing, the machine automatically stops with the needle down, in the fabric. Standard machines stop with the needle up, which is great for clothing, but annoying for quilting. And of course, if you're going to stuff a whole quilt under the machine, you want as much space as possible under the arm.
If you're going to buy a new machine, it's still worth a little extra money to get a good brand, like Janome, Bernina, Pfaff, Husqvarna Viking, or Babylock. For a basic machine, they'll all offer similar quality and features. Find out what dealers are in your area - it's just as important to have easy access to your dealer for repairs, troubleshooting, and training.
If you don't want to spend too much money, look for an older used workhorse machine - any of these brand, but old Singers are also good (the new ones not so much).
Is this wrong Iam a college freshman & the books that I need for my classes are all over $100 should I copy it
In college the books are so damn expensive so what I mean is that in the college library they have a big copying machine & I want to know if I should copy all my books that I should buy at full price in a copying machine. For example my history book is 500 pages & cost $120 but on the copying machine to copy a page is 5 cents so if I copy all 500 pages at 5 cents each then I can copy the whole book for $25 ($0.05 times 500=$25) Is this illegal or can I go to jail for it or should I totally do it to save big bucks on book fees. The only problem is that it would take an hour or longer to copy a 500 page book depending on how fast the machine copys each page.
I understand your dillemma. If you are flatbroke I think you should check the university library and see if they have any textbooks on reserve. I suggest looking at amazon.com, BN.com, half.com somestimes if youre lucky you can find 100+ dollar books for twenty five dollars, and when you are done you can resell the book for the same price or more depending on the venue you sell it through. As for the copying of the book different books have different copyright restrictions so it may or may not be illegal. But Man! just look online before you take up two hours of your time copying a book you may not even use and cannot sell back! Good Luck Bro!
