The Machine That Changed the World $12.99 When The Machine That Changed the World was first published in 1990, Toyota was half the size of General Motors. Today Toyota is passing GM as the world's largest auto maker and is the most consistently successful global enterprise of the past fifty years. This management classic was the first book to reveal Toyota's lean production system that is the basis for its enduring success. Now reissued with a new Foreword and Afterword, Machine contrasts two fundamentally different business systems -- lean versus mass, two very different ways of thinking about how humans work together to create value. Based on the largest and most thorough study ever undertaken of any industry -- MIT's five-year, fourteen-country International Motor Vehicle Program -- this book describes the entire managerial system of lean production. Nearly twenty years ago, Womack, Jones, and Roos provided a comprehensive description of the entire lean system. They exhaustively documented its advantages over the mass production model pioneered by General Motors and predicted that lean production would eventually triumph. Indeed, they argued that it would triumph not just in manufacturing but in every value-creating activity from health care to retail to distribution. Today The Machine That Changed the World provides enduring and essential guidance to managers and leaders in every industry seeking to transform traditional enterprises into exemplars of lean success. |

Architectural Model as Machine $64.95 This book offers an explanation of why scale models are important to the design process. Albert Smith takes the reader through the history and significance of models in architecture from the magic of the Egyptian scale model to the present day. Through this description of the relationship between architecture and the scale model, Smith demonstrates the most effective process between concept and 'machine', between the idea and the final building. The great value of this book is to reveal the nature of the scale model and to unlock the tremendous potential of this design tool as a thinking and communicative advice. His chronological analysis goes on from Egypt through Rome to the relationship between the Greek paradigm scale model and then on to Medieval and Renaissance models. It concludes with the models of the Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, the Russian Constructivists, the American architect Louis Khan and finally looks at the role of scale models in the present day through the work of the Polish/American architect Daniel Libeskind and the American Frank Gehry. * First book to address the question of why and how architects use scale models for projects allowing designers to learn the most effective ways of communicating their ideas through the model medium * A unique insight into the dynamic thought process of designers through history to the present day to inspire today's practitioners |

Where to Find Parts For an Antique Sewing Machine
Where to search out Parts For the Antique Sewing Machine
Whether or not you love to collect very old stitching equipment or maybe happen to have an aged one lying around the house somewhere and don't actually understand this can be a classic equipment, the day may possibly arrive at the time you come to a decision to have it back into great working order. During these moments, you could well be looking for several old-fashioned machine parts to substitute the ones that are generally broken down or need some restore.
Sewing machines are believed to have got first be given existence method back in the late 1700's. To make sure, should you have had some of those right now you'd probably have a very precious asset. If your passion is to collect the classics as well as the oldies, then you're most likely conscious of the worthiness of these antique models produced prior to 1900, and those considered to be vintage models which were made after the year 1900. If you don't collect them and get lucky and have one stowed away in a closet, you will be thrilled to learn just how valuable that old machine is.
However, understand that the value of this traditional is determined by what type of condition it is in. That is definitely destined to be worth a lot more if it is in very good condition and all of its parts are in functioning order. Even so, the older the sewing machine may be the much more unlikely it will be that this will be the case.
Luckily, getting functioning antique sewing machine parts is not always a dead end; specifically along with such numerous types of things available over the internet today. You can generally come across a part for your machine just by looking around auction sites like eBay, or even some of the online classified ad web sites. Be cautious with some of the ad sites though - not everyone online is trustworthy as you and I are.
In order to get along with that, it might be a good idea to make a phone call to the manufacturer of the machine; that is, if they are still in business. If they are, and you have the model number, they may have, or know where you can get parts for it. There is a very good likelihood that they will be able to at least point you in the right direction. Thinking about that you haven't got anything to lose, it's worth giving it a shot, right?
An additional point you can attempt would be to make it a point to visit your local garage sales to see if anybody has some old sewing machines or parts they want to get rid of. Right now there is no telling what might be available to you at a garage sale, and it is not unusual for an individual to have what they consider to be just an old piece of junk that they got from a friend or relative, and they don't even recognize it to be a hidden treasure just waiting for a new appreciative owner; somebody just like you!

Machine Classic Model Questions
Simplicity Sewing Machine S-02 Will Not Sew?
I have a simplicity sewing machine (which I hate; I've always loved Singer sewing machines) and I've done everything I could already think of - I even went online and checked.
The problem is that whenever I sew, it'll sew one or two stitches and then stop.
(this is what I've gotten it to, since it was bunching before)
I changed the needle.
I changed the bobbin 3 times.
I wound a new bobbin.
I changed the thread tension.
I changed the stitch size.
It just won't sew anything!
So, what I think is either it needs to be reconditioned or the thread is too cheap.
Help?
D:
it sews towards me.
like, that's the only way i've ever seen it sew.
the model is an S-02.
i don't know if it's a lockstitch. ):
I found the model online!
http://cgi.ebay.com/Simplicity-Classic-Model-S-02-*An-Easy-Sewing-Machine!_W0QQitemZ370115451768QQcmdZViewItem
This is the exact one I have.
"It sews towards me" -- the fabric is pushed toward you? If so, the reverse is engaged or stuck.
Is the machine close enough to purchase date that it can be returned? Machines in this price class are often referred to as "plastic wonders" in a tone not complimentary. I think you've found out why.
If you can get the machine out of reverse, here's the general rundown of things to check off:
1) needle in right way around (backwards needles make skipped stitches), A size 80/12 sharp is what most mechs use for testing and timing, so it's a good choice for troubleshooting, too.
2) bobbin in bobbin case right way around; bobbin thread is in tension, bobbin case is latched.
3) top threaded with presser foot raised so the thread actually enters the top tension. Make sure your thread path is correct, and floss the upper thread into the tension before lowering the presser foot. If the thread isn't in the tension, you get loops on the bottom of the fabric.
4) set top tension to 4 (normal tension for most fabrics)
5) set machine for straight stitch, 2.5-4mm stitch length
6) fetch up the bobbin thread
7) place fabric under presser foot; use handwheel to drop the needle into the fabric, then drop the presser foot.
hold bobbin thread and top behind the presser foot while you take the first couple of stitches. Then drop the thread ends and sew.
If this doesn't work, can you possibly take photos of the sample stitching, both sides?
How do I go about washing my cap?
You see I have bought a special baseball cap the other day and it was really cheap. It's a cap model based of the classic NES controller. Here is a picture: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001X43V7G/ref=asc_df_B001X43V7G1226408?smid=A2W6HR0CMOMC9D&tag=shopzilla_mp_1388-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B001X43V7G.
My issue is that the brim of the cap is brown and rusty and every time I hand wash it, by the time it dries the rust is still there. Can someone help figure out how to hand wash my cap correctly? I'll even go as far as the washing machine if necessary. Please no smart alec comments. And Serious answers please.
i wash my sons baseball caps in the dishwasher. i did buy a metal form at walmart that goes inside the hat to keep its shape. DONT let the dishwasher dry though. it can shrink the cap. Is the brim plastic inside or is it cardboard? cardboard will get ruined, plastic wont. you =can put pubber bands on the bill. if you are really worried, just use oxyclean on the rust spots. make a paste, and leave it on for a few hours, then rinse. Good luck! I havent ruined any of my sons caps, some of which we paid over 75 dollars for!
