Boot camps for overweight kids allow kids to connect and bond with others with similar issues as themselves, develop self esteem and learn new lifestyle habits that will hopefully stick with them well after they have left the weight loss boot camp.
The idea behind weight loss boot camps for overweight children is to provide a safe and empowering environment for kids to face the weight problem without feeling ashamed, allowing them to tackle the problem head on. They are taught how to eat a healthy diet and just as important, when to eat.
Combined with diet, the children are provided with fun activities that promote exercise and teamwork, so the kids are able to lose weight in a fun and supportive environment. Skills learned at boot camps can be carried forward into daily life, so that the old routines such as sitting in front of the computer or tv for hours on end can are broken.
One popular boot camp has a great success rate. They claim that over 2 out of 3 overweight kids that attend will either maintain the weight they reach when leaving boot camp, or continue to lose weight. The reason for this success rate is due to the lifestyle changes that they instill in not only the overweight children at the boot camp, but also the family lifestyle, which are easy to adopt in normal life. Studies have shown that the best way to help overweight kids lose weight is to change the lifestyle of the family unit, so that the adults are leading by example, both in a health diet and regular exercise.
Some activities that you can expect at a boot camps for overweight kids include hiking, camping, canoeing, cycling, kayaking, rock climbing, and team sports. The benefit of these activities being held at a boot camp for overweight kids is that everyone is on a level playing field, and no child should feel intimidated or unworthy which is half the battle to get kids with weight issues to participate in the first place.

Normal Weight Chart For Children Questions
When to stop baby formula?
My twins are 12 months and 12 days old. They were born six weeks early so their corrected age would be 11 months. They have been taking four to five eight ounce bottles of formula and four to six jars of baby food a day since they were around seven months. I need to know when I need to taper them off the formula. I see that most moms start at a year and some even have their children completely off formula at a year. I am a little apprehensive about taking them off formula at a year because I don't see how they could be getting all of the required nutrients from baby food/solids alone. Although they were preemies they are in the lower part of normal range for their weight 21lbs 6oz and 21lbs 3oz, according to the charts and are considered big for their corrected age.
Most people have told me to consult my pediatrician however we are without insurance so they do not have a regular doctor as of right now.
Does anyone have experience with feeding preemies?
My twins were a bit smaller than yours at the 1 year point and were born 3 weeks early, and our pediatrician still recommended that we make the switch at their 1 year check up. I was concerned, too - especially since my daughter has a heart defect, but they did just fine on the milk and we supplement with Poly-Vi-Sol vitamins to fill in any gaps in their diet.
My son switched to milk cold turkey but my daughter resisted so with her, we did a gradual switch that took about 3 weeks - we mixed a bit of whole milk with formula, then blended more milk and less formula until she was completely on the formula over time.
Best wishes!
