Have you ever heard of the BMI (Body Mass Index) scale? Yeah, you know what it is (if you don't, Google "Body Mass Index Calculator").

In short, BMI is a calculation that takes your height and weight and gives you a number. If that number is above 25, then you're considered over-weight... but guess what -- It's not accurate!

How Does BMI Work?

Let me go back for a minute and do a better job explaining what the BMI is.

Body Mass Index is a calculation based on your height and weight. I don't know exactly how the calculation works, but I know that you give your height and weight (in feet/inches and pounds, respectively), and you get a number in return.

If you ask anyone who has seen me at the beach if I am over weight, they will immediately say NO.

In fact, my body fat percentage is less than 10%... so why is my BMI number so high? Why does the BMI calculation suggest that I am over weight?

I know why... and this is why you shouldn't trust your BMI.. because:

If you have relatively bigger bones than the average human or if you have big muscles - then you're going to weigh more. There is nothing you can do about having bigger bones, so how are you supposed to lose weight?

Let's say you have big muscles because you work out, either strength training, or maybe you run a lot so your thighs and calves are bigger than the average person -- guess what? Your BMI is going to suggest that you are over weight!

You Know When You're Over Weight

Long story short is this: you will know if you have excessive fat on your body. The signs are clear, and I'm not going to tell you what they are.

A little fat is healthy and necessary, so don't worry if your body fat percentage is around 10%, but if it gets above 15%, it might be time to lose some weight.

Just do me a favor and don't rely on your BMI number as a measure of how healthy you are, because it is not that accurate.

*Disclaimer: I'm not a certified personal trainer or anything like that, but I do know from experience that if eat well and work out 3 days a week, you will see results. I also know that if you lift heavy weights and eat a lot of protein to build muscle, your BMI number is going rise - but that's NOT a bad thing in that case!

Am I underweight or normal weight?

A few minutes ago, I was looking through a website for average weight by your height. It said that the average weight a girl that's 5' 4" is 108 - 132 lbs and I'm only 95 pounds. Is this normal.

Body Fat Percentage Question. Why is this?

I recently bought a scale that can tell you many things that a normal scale cannot, such as your body fat %, your water % and things like that. According to the scale, I am 60% water, and 13-14% fat.

Im 6'1", 190 pounds, and decently muscular.

Apparently, if your my weight and height and have a body fat % of 13, you should be skinny, but, I have quite a bit of ecess fat.

Anyone have a reason for this?

Maybe the scales are innacurate.

But I wouldn't think at 190lb, 6ft1 and 13% body fat you wouldn't be skinny, just lean with a good amount of muscle mass.
