Protein Shake Weight Loss System Questions


How do I build muscle in conjunction with weight lifting?

I am a 22 year old male who lifts weights several times a week and then swims a mile. After lifting weights but before swimming, I drink a protein shake. I have experienced weight loss and more definition in my muscles, but they don't seem to be getting larger. Should I drink my protein shake after swimming instead of after weight lifting? Or, should I drink one after both? Could swimming after drinking my protein shake flush the protein out of my system instead of into my muscles? Could swimming so much be hindering my muscle growth? Any suggestions are appreciated.

sounds to me like there could be a number of factors:

1- how MUCH are you eating?

2- how MUCH are you swimming?

3- what is the INTENSITY of your weight training?

the basic rule of thumb is: when losing body fat, one must operate at a caloric defacit, to increase mass (muscle mass) one must increase caloric intake-

now the TYPE of calories is important here.

i don't buy into the dirty bulk crap- "its just an excuse to pig out" - alan aragon

having a protien/carb shake after a workout can stimulate muscle re-growth- whcih leads to stregth.

now are you looking to build stregth or actually get more bulk?

your weight routines should focus on heavier lifts for lower reps- this way you are exerting more force with each lift- doing more reps serves more to increase muscle endurance but so long as you up the intensity, you can in fact build taht way too but a heavier weight a 3 sets of 5 reps, is more optimal than a lesser one at 3 sets of 10 for example- theres more to it than that, but for now a simple switch like that should see you gains-

keep in mind (this is key) that you MUST be lifting to the point where you feel you are not able to lift another rep on your 5th rep no matter what- if you can do 7, raise the weight in yoru next workout.

given that you are doing swimming and its obviously something you enjoy- i wouldn't say you have to reduce or give it up-

just keep in mind that you burn calories during swimming, so you will be creating a defacit all teh more.

try the small change and see what happens. also wehn you eat more- look for more protien rich foods- a good way to sneak extra protien into your diet is whey powder (make sure its no added sugar).
