WHO Child Growth Standards - Length/Height-for-age, Weight-for-age, Weight-for-length, Weight-for-height and Body Mass Index-for age $45 A comprehensive review of the uses and interpretation of anthropometric references undertaken by WHO in the early 1990s concluded that new growth curves were needed to replace the existing international reference. To develop new standards, a multi-country study was carried out to collect primary growth data and related information from 8440 healthy breastfed infants and young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings (Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, Oman and the USA). The first set of growth standards (length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, weight-for-height and body mass index-for-age) are presented in this report. The curves represent the best description of physiological growth for children under five years of age. The standards depict normal early childhood growth under optimal environmental conditions and can be used to assess children everywhere, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status and type of feeding. This report will be useful to paediatricians and other healthcare providers, nutritionists, policy makers, researchers, national institutes of health, schools of medicine, and professional associations. |

Weight Loss Surgery in Ohio
Ohio is under attack by obesity. Over 61% of the population of Ohio is overweight or obese.
Obesity kills. The disease attacks both the body – through hypertension, coronary artery disease, sleep apnea, orthopedic problems and type 2 Diabetes – and the spirit, through low self esteem, increased risk for discrimination, and poor body image.
It’s not just the grownups that are getting bigger in Ohio. Around 14% of all school-age kids in Ohio are obese or overweigh – and there’s a 70% chance the obese child will become an overweight adult, as well.
This epidemic is costing us money, too. According to the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity, obesity accounts for 7.7% of all Medicare spending and 10.3% of Medicaid spending in Ohio.
The damage is too great to ignore. We’ve got to stop obesity in our state.
Buckeyes Battle the Bulge
What is obesity? It is a medical condition characterized by a body mass index (BMI = weight in pounds x 703 / [height in inches]2 ) above that which is healthy for a person of a given height and build. The only way to a better BMI is to lose excess weight.
Happily, mere weight loss is easy to accomplish. The math is simple: When a person takes in fewer calories than his or her body needs, weight loss occurs. Some of us can make the math work through sheer willpower. However, willpower alone isn’t the cure for obesity.
Obesity is not a weakness of character. Obesity is a disease -- a medical condition that requires medical treatment centering on a complete change in the patient’s lifestyle and eating habits. For most obese people, support groups, medically-supervised diets, and education are the ideal therapy for obesity. But for dangerously obese patients, weight loss surgery may be the only useful treatment.
About Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery works by surgically altering the patient’s stomach and, in some cases, the digestive tract, to limit the amount of food the patient can eat. The patient is placed under general anesthesia; then, the surgeon performs a laparoscopic procedure to physically alter the stomach and/or bowel of the patient, greatly reducing their holding capacity. These alterations force the patient to take in fewer calories each day than his or her body burns, resulting in the loss of excess weight.
But surgery only works as part of a total medical treatment plan. It is not a magical cure. Patients who fail to follow the recommended treatment plan after surgery—which often includes counseling, as well as dietary changes—may regain any weight lost.
Is bariatric surgery for everyone? It is not. Each individual case is unique, and only by consulting with one’s physician regarding the risks and possible outcomes of surgery in a given case can an informed decision regarding weight loss surgery be made.
The Battle Begins
Buckeyes are not known for backing down in the face of trouble – and we can’t back down now. Ohio can win the war on obesity. By treating this disease as a disease, we can make our state a happier, better, and more beautiful place to be.

Recommended Weight For Height And Age Questions
I'm very fat for my height and age... : ( How can I get down to 90-110 lbs?
I'm 14 years old, female, 4'11 and I weigh around 130lbs. I know it's overweight, I'm constantly reminded of that by my peers. I just don't feel comfortable in my own skin any more- most girls in my age group/class don't tip the scales at 110lbs tops. I'm often made fun of, and poked at, I even get grief from my own family. I have self confidence issues, and there's been times I wanted to run from the room and cry. I'm not particularly athletic, unlike my classmates, and with good reason. I have severe asthma and find it hard to run even short distances or move around for long in P.E. I'm not popular and guys don't really notice me, I get nervous when people speak to me. I don't want to live like this anymore, I've had enough, and want to change. What would you recommend a healthy weight for me? What would be a realistic goal? How would I get down to this ideal weight?
Thank You xxx
im in the same boat as you.
I dont know exactly how much i weigh atm since i have been dieting, but last time i weighed myself i has 160 ish i think.. im only 5'1.
I deffinatley lost a bit of weight im not keeping track of how much though.
Everyones noticing that im loosing weight so im probably doing somthing right.
I eat as soon as i get up.
Thats really important because if you wait all day to eat your just making your body think that
your starving yourself so when you do eat it will start to store food.
Usually when i get up i eat a banana .
Eat more but in smaller healthier portions.
Dont eat less because it wont help.
Dont eat cookies chips cake.. none of that proccessed crap.
(I used to eat a whole box at once of cookies) Now i cant stand putting
anything thats not natural into my body.
So snack of fruits during the day, i usually eat kiwi, bananas, nectarines and apples.
For dinner have half your plate vegetables (Im a big cauliflower and broccoli eater)
A quatre meat (So like a peice of meat that isnt fried, try getting your parents to bake more often and use one table spoon of oil and the rest water) and the other quatre try havign a peice of whole grain bread or some type of grain.
Its important you drink alot of water!
And be active. Try going for walks, dancing around your room to your favourite band, running up and down your stairs etc) anything that gets your heartbeat up!
And dont consider it as a diet, make theese changes for the rest of your life.
Youll be healthier, thinner, and your complexion will be really clear.
And your hair will look more healthy to aswell as your nails (=
Goodluck!
Why are some people so rude?
Whatever happened to if you don't have something nice to say don't say it alI? I was asking a question a few days ago about a dress and i stated my height and weight (I'm 5 foot 5 and about 200 pounds). And i know I need to lose weight but some guy had the nerve to say "you really need to lose about 80 pounds before you consider buying a dress. how could a girl your age allow herself to become so disgusting?".How could someone be so rude? And besides that if i would lose 80 pounds i would be 120 but I looked it up and a doctors recommended weight for my height is between 130 and 150, So I just don't understand how someone can be so rude.Like I said I know I need to lose weight simply for my health and I'm trying.I usually don't let stuff like this bother me because I have always been chubby. But I just don't understand how can someone be so rude ?Thanks for the answers.
Don't worry. You know, people who put other people down like that usually have low self esteem or they're hurting on the inside and don't like something about themselves, so being rude to people like that makes them feel better about themselves. So really they're the ones who have something wrong with them, not you.
