Grandpaboy includes: Covington (guitar); Elrod (harmonica); Twixt Pine (bass); Twiddle (drums). So, like all of Paul Westerberg's loyal fans, you've been dreaming of the day that the great cranky genius of slop-rock would record a blues album, right? OK, probably not, but Westerberg went and did it anyway (under the guise of his alter ego, Grandpaboy), and Dead Man Shake turns out to be a better album than you might expect under the circumstances. Like the previous Grandpaboy long-player, Mono, Dead Man Shake was recorded in Westerberg's basement studio, with "Winthrope Marion Purcival V" once again handling all the instruments, and though one can't help but wish the guy would find a decent drummer, the shabby but emphatic sound of these tracks at once honors the blues-leaning material on deck and suits Westerberg's musical instincts quite well. (The thick echo and chunky guitar textures also recall the sound of the late-'50s/early-'60s Chess Records sessions, though one doubts the similarity was at all intentional.) Dead Man Shake was released around the same time as the soundtrack to Westerberg's documentary video Come Feel Me Tremble, and both seem to be put together from Westerberg's B-list material, but Dead Man Shake in comparison appears to be B-plus product; his 12-bar meandering on "No Matter What You Say" and "Natural Mean Lover" allow him to make good use of his snarkiness, "Vampires and Failures," "O.D. Blues," and "Get a Move On" suggest they could have been A-list material with a bit more work, and if the Minneapolis City Council goes on a collective bender long enough, it might make "MPLS" the town's new anthem. Westerberg also reveals a strong command for covers here; while his takes on Jimmy Reed ("Take Out Some Insurance") and Hank Williams ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry") are terrific, the bigger surprise is that you can say the same of his interpretations of John Prine ("Souvenirs") and even, gulp, Anthony Newley ("What Kind of Fool Am I"). Dead Man Shake sounds like something Paul Westerberg tossed off for fun in a week or so, but this time one can say that in a good way, and for simple gut-level satisfaction it's more engaging than the bulk of his post-Replacements catalog, though anyone expecting a masterpiece will be in for an unpleasant awakening. ~ Mark Deming

Shake Weight For Man

Which Man Would You Rather Be?

If you are a man and are looking to get the most out of your workouts and the best way to lose weight, ask yourself which of these men would you rather be?

The first man will stick to a single workout routine.  He will come to the gym quite often at least five to six times per week.  As soon as he arrives at the gym he will start to do nothing but upper body workouts.  These workouts will consist of extremely heavy weights and very few reps.   He will also take quite a noticeable amount of time between their sets.  He will do declining sets of the heavier weight, and will take anywhere from seven to ten minutes between the sets to allow their body to recover.  He will never do any cardio exercise, and he will not do any type of stretching exercises.  When he returns from the gym he will eat whatever he wants.

The second man will still lift heavier weights, but not as heavy as the first man.  He will use super sets in order to help him to not waste time at the gym, and to keep his heart rate elevated throughout his workout.  He will still use the free weights and dumbbells like the first man, but he will also do a complete body workout.  He will not only work his upper body, but he will do workouts that will help to train his legs and core.  He will do stretches two to three times a week that will help to strength and flatten out his mid section.  He will also have a good nutritional program that will allow him to get the most out of his body.  He will eat a balanced diet that includes portions of protein and carbohydrates. He will also do cardio training at least three times a week.

While the efforts of the first man will lead to muscular results, it will lead to a more bulky and less tone look.  The first man will also have less physical endurance, and will be lacking muscles in his core and legs.  He will appear unbalanced and disproportioned.  The second man will be healthier overall in comparison to the first man.  He will have better cardiovascular health due to his cardio training during the week.  He will also have a more toned and defined muscular look compared with the first man.  The stretching that the second man does will help him to have a stronger core and legs.  Plus, the better nutritional program will help him to achieve better results.

The second man will know the importance of tight lean muscle fibers, and knows that the best way to help your body to build lean muscle fiber is through adding protein to your diet.  A person that is actively weight training should take in at least half their body weight in grams of protein a day.  The best way to get that amount of protein into your diet without raising the amounts of carbohydrates and fats is by taking a good whey protein supplement.  Whey protein supplements are great because they are easier to digest compared to soy based products.  They also contain a higher percentage of protein per serving.  Whey protein isolates contain 90% pure protein per serving, and they don’t contain the fillers of fats and carbohydrates that other protein supplements contain.

When you are working out it is important to be thinking about getting the most out of the gym.  While the first man is getting some results, the second man is getting the results that he really wants.  When planning your workout be sure to think about smart workout programs and smart nutrition.
