What would be a good way for me to loose weight?
I am a 19 year old man and I have finally decided to loose weight by whatever means possible. I am currently 220 pounds, and I have set a goal for myself of getting down to 190 pounds.
Recently I have been doing SlimFast. I have only a shake for Breakfast and Lunch, I eat a moderate dinner. I take two green tea pills in the morning and another two in the afternoon. So far it seems to be working.
I exercise (usually biking) for about 30 minutes a day, and I walk a lot at work. I am thinking about adding 50 curl-ups every other day as well.
I don't know much about any of this stuff, so any help is appreciated.
First of all...stop with the Slim-Fast. Instead try eating a lot of fresh veggies...carrots, celery, broccoli, cucumbers romaine lettuce, tomatoes, and young spinach are great raw. You can also try stir-fried or steamed other veggies. But stay away from lots of butter or oil and all deep fried anything.
Fresh fruits are another great option. However, fruit is high in sugar, so you have to be careful. That is also why you should avoid fruit juices and dried fruits...too much concentrated sugar. Bananas, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, apples, and oranges are all good choices. Add in some kiwi, grapefruit, and melon...and you are good to go.
Eat lots of fiber and protein, and minimize your fat and sugar intake. Beans are good choice.
Also stop with the green tea pills. Just drink the green tea with lemon and stevia.
Drink lots of water! NO fruit juices (except grapefruit) or soft drinks or alcohol.
If you cut down on your actual food intake your body may start storing fat...this is a very common mistake among dieters. It is NOT necessarily the amount of food you are eating, but the quality of the food.
Next focus on your exercise.30 minutes of biking unless you are really moving or going uphill a lot is not enough. Try jogging/walking instead. Jog (or even sprint) until you are too tired to continue...then walk until you feel strong enough to jog again and repeat until you are done. This will burn more calories than biking. You can also add ankle and hand weights to really boost your output.
Also a good aerobic work-out like Tae Bo does wonders.
Weght lifting is great for overall health, it will build more muscle which will increase your weight, but will also increase your resting metabolism. Which will help you lose more fat.

Is the Shake Weight really effective?
I'm a 20 year old female, 5'7" inches tall and 115 pounds. I'm pretty skinny and this year my resolution is to turn that around and tone up. My arms are like sticks. There's absolutely no fat or muscle - I'm super self conscious about them!
So I saw a commercial for the Shake Weight and it seems easy enough. Its only $20 - should I buy one? Has anyone tried it? Does it work? What parts of your body does it tone? Just the arms or the core as well? Is it hard to use?
I'm just a little wary, so any info about it would be great! I don't want buff man arms. I just want to be stronger and give my arms some definition.

And, btw, "toning" is a useless word. It comes from "tonus" which is the tension in a relaxed muscle and not something you can improve in a normal muscle. Now people have misused the word and such that it means building muscle a little bit but not too much (however much that is) while losing the subcutaneous fat concealing the muscle so it's more well defined...oh, but not having to work really hard to do all that. "Tone" is a junk word which is virtually meaningless in the world of bodybuilding.
There are only two things you can do to sculpt a better body.
1. Add or lose fat
2. Add or lose muscle
"Toning" is not even on the list.
If you're thin and eat a proper diet you probably come by your body type naturally....genetically. In other words, you may be a natural ectomorph. If so, you'll find putting on fat difficult and muscle much more difficult than fat.
If you're self conscious about your weight, try eating more food. Eat a proper diet but increase portions and allow yourself to add body fat. Fat has a bad rep because we are such a fat country full of fat people. However, being underweight is not good either and adding fat to achieve a normal BMI is a good thing.
Don't waste your time building muscle you're not going to use. Once you begin building muscle you can't stop or you lose everything you've worked so hard to get. If you want to build muscle do it for strength, bone density, general health, or a new you and a new lifestyle. However, don't do it for vanity alone because you will likely be disappointed with the results, lose interest, and have wasted a lot of work for nothing. Adding muscle is hard work...very hard work and requires a long term commitment, discipline, tenacity, resources, and more.
