The Right Weight For Your Height

We hear it all the time on radio and TV and we're bombarded on the Internet with the advertisements. "Get a quote" they say.

Nothing is more common in the life insurance industry than a client who asks for a "quote." But, what really is a quote anyway?

Real simple. A quote is a price that an agent or website may provide that, in the vast majority of cases, has nothing to do with what you will actually pay for your life insurance. Exciting huh?

Quotes are generated by software and/or rate charts. They are generic prices. They mean very little in regard to you personally.

You provide the agent with your age and smoking status and the amount of coverage that you want and maybe the length of the term that you want it. The agent inputs this data into the software program and out burps a price. Shazaam! But, can you get that price? At this point, no one knows.

Is the agent looking at the price for a person with perfect health or an average person? Are your height and weight taken into account? Your cholesterol level? Blood pressure? Do you take any medicines? Have 2 or more moving violations? DUI's? Felonies? Ever use illicit drugs? How long since you've seen a doctor? Which insurance company is the agent looking at? Are they very strict or more liberal in their approval process?

Most agents have a desire to help people, but they also need to make a living. They want to have a chance at being your agent. So, which price will an agent, faced with a request for a quote, provide to you? Let's take a look at the options available in a typical case.

Literally at this very moment, a quote is being generated. Let's take a 40 year old male, non-smoker who wants $500,000 in Term Life Insurance for 20 years. How much will it cost him?

Of the 115 results that have been calculated, his price could run from $30.39/mo to $108.00/mo and that's only for Fully Underwritten Plans that require a physical exam and possibly blood or urine samples. Can he get the $30.39? No one knows.

A good Life Agent will let you know the price range and that your price will be dependent on your health status and other factors. Some agents might tell you that your price could be "as low as" $30.39 and hope to set an appointment with you. Or even other agents might run prices for Accidental Death Insurance and quote you "as low as" maybe $20.00.

So, this client is now armed with what knowledge? Well, to be frank, nothing particularly useful really.

Shopping for Term Life Insurance based on price quotes alone is a farce. It's like calling your doctor and saying "Doctor, I don't feel good. Give me a prescription." Your doctor will certainly want to examine you and get more information and maybe even take some blood, urine or have you do an Xray right?

How about asking a Contractor how much it will cost to remodel your kitchen? Yep, more info and an on-site inspection before they'll give you any price.

It's no different in the Life Insurance world. Life Agents are licensed, trained professionals. A generic price quote is no different than a doctor who says "take two aspirin and call me in the morning." You got "something" but is it really helpful to you?

Life Insurance is one of the most intensely customized and personalized products that there is other than maybe dental work or custom orthotics. Yet, it's often advertised, promoted and sold as if it's a "one size fits all" deal. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's vital that you apply for the right product with the right insurance carrier. That's where your Life Agent comes in.

If you apply for the wrong product, it can really hurt you. As we've discussed before, a "rate up" or declined application can make it difficult if not impossible to get coverage from another insurance company for 5-7 years and sometimes longer.

Giving up your privacy and submitting your blood and urine for exhaustive testing can also hurt, rather than help you. Your Life Agent should be able to tell you which route is in your best interest.

Insurance companies regard Life Agents as "field underwriters." That means they are tasked with the job of getting the health, background and lifestyle information necessary in order to correctly identify the right company and product choice. After all, everyone's goal is to get a policy underwritten, approved and placed quickly and appropriately for that specific client's needs and situation.

So, instead of looking for a meaningless price quote, how should you shop for Term Life Insurance?

We'll deal with that issue in the very next article, Buying Term Life Insurance: How To Get Qualified

The Right Weight For Your Height Questions

Am I the Right Weight & Height To Become A Flyer In Cheerleading?

I am 12 years old and I have just joined a cheerleading team just 2 months ago. I really want to be a flyer because I love being the centre of attention.

I am one of the youngest and shortest girl on the team. My team is for girls ages 12-14, with the acception of an 8 year old. I am the 6th shortest in my squad out of 20 girls.

I am very flexible, but I'm not very strong. I think I would be the perfect person to be a flyer! But right now I'm a base. I have already told my coach that I wanted to be a flyer, she said that there were no guaranties but she would try her best.

Weeks passed, I wasn't a flyer!

The only thing is that I have never done cheerleading before, but have been in a competitive gymnastics team.

I weigh about 88-90 pounds, and I'm 4 foot 10. My thighs are on the big side, but the rest of me is slim.

Am I too tall or fat?

Could you tell me some ways to convince my coach to let me be a flyer?

Thanks for all of your help!

My sister is a cheerleader, and a flyer.

She says: you aren't too fat at all and lots of girls have big thighs, and to be a flyer you need a lot of muscle in your legs. Especially when you're doing a lib cos you have to use all your leg strength to lock it down. You need lots of muscle in your muscle in your abs for a cradle, practice your heel stretches and scorps at home and show your coach to prove how flexible you are on the ground and not just in the air. You aren't too tall at all, and my sister is taller than that and weighs ten pounds more so you're fine in that area. Most of the girls on her team are much taller than her, she's 5'3 and they fly too. You shouldn't have any issue as long as you're flexible and have lots of ab strength.

Sprinting/Running Question?

Okay, so i made a 20 dollar bet with my dad... i'm almost positive i'm right, but he won't believe any logic, so i need your guys' help :P

When sprinting/running as fast as you can, everybody's frequency of one foot crossing the other is the same.

I said that that was false, because everybody's weight, height, and muscle mass would need to be the same in order for that to be true.
also, because people can increase and decrease footcrossing frequency, there is no possible way that everybody's frequency would be the same when they're running as fast as they can.

But my dad won't buy it, and he wants proof... so can you guys give me some more argueable points? with sources, if you can. thanks :D
[i want to buy some new headphones, and this'll help]

I agree with you, because what if there's a 6'5 feet tall guy who has super long leg and therefore, a super long stride. Then there's a really short guy who has really fast turnover, but really short strides. They could be running at the same speed, but the tall guy is taking less steps, and so the frequency is less for him.

I don't know if that helped you at all, but hopefully it did :)
