High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Gladstone Dale relation is used for optical analysis, or to calculate the density of a liquid for use in fluid dynamics. The relation has also been used to calculate refractive index of glass and minerals in optical mineralogy. In the Gladstone Dale relation, the index of refraction or the density of miscible liquids that are mixed in mass fraction can be calculated from characteristic optical constants of pure molecular endmembers. For example, for any mass of ethanol added to a mass of water, the alcohol content is determined by measuring density or index of refraction. Mass per unit volume is the density m/V. Mass is conserved on mixing, but the volume of 1 cm3 of ethanol mixed with 1 cm3 of water is reduced to less than 2 cm3 due to the formation of ethanolwater bonds. The plot of volume or density versus molecular fraction of ethanol in water is a quadratic curve. However, the plot of index of refraction versus molecular fraction of ethanol in water is linear, and the weight fraction equals the fractional density. A comprehensive review of the uses and interpretation of anthropometric references undertaken by WHO in the early 1990s concluded that new growth curves were needed to replace the existing international reference. To develop new standards, a multi-country study was carried out to collect primary growth data and related information from 8440 healthy breastfed infants and young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings (Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, Oman and the USA). The first set of growth standards (length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, weight-for-height and body mass index-for-age) are presented in this report. The curves represent the best description of physiological growth for children under five years of age. The standards depict normal early childhood growth under optimal environmental conditions and can be used to assess children everywhere, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status and type of feeding. This report will be useful to paediatricians and other healthcare providers, nutritionists, policy makers, researchers, national institutes of health, schools of medicine, and professional associations.

Weight In Relation To Height

It seems that this subject is causing some confusion with people who are trying to lose weight, so hopefully we can clear this up for you once and for all!

What is Body Mass Index?

Body Mass Index or BMI is the relation between your height and your weight. When you have a BMI test you will be presented with a figure that determines whether or not you are overweight for your height.

So let's look at this in more detail, if you are a 5 foot 5 inch tall person, (this apples to both male and female) your ideal BMI figure will be between 19 and 24 as it is for any height. If your BMI figure is above 24 then you are deemed to be overweight in varying degrees. In other words if you have a BMI figure of 25 or 26 then you are slightly overweight for your height, however if you have a 30 or 40 BMI figure then this would indicate that you are seriously overweight and even obese for your height.

The BMI figure is used by a lot of Doctors, Employers, Health Insurance Companies, the Military and loads of other organisations to determine your state of health.

Is the BMI figure and accurate reading of your health? Well not necessarily. The reason that the BMI figure is somewhat outdated is that it does not take into account your muscle mass. A BMI reading will measure everything muscle, fat, bones all of you in other words.

Let's look at first of all a male or female with a BMI of 35, this would make him or her overweight even obese. If this person is obviously carrying a lot of body fat and looks massively overweight due to the body fat then the BMI figure rings true and they are obese.

However, and this is a full bodied, huge, however, if they have a lot of lean muscle and are in great shape like a bodybuilder or fitness person then their BMI will still 35 but this doesn't mean they are overweight in an unhealthy way like the fat person.

So if you can have a BMI of 35 with two completely different types of person how do we tell if they are healthy or not. You could just look at them I guess, but there is another way.

Body Fat %. What is this I hear you cry?

Body Fat % is the relation between how much body fat you have in comparison to the amount of lean muscle. The more lean muscle the less body fat % you will have.

So let's take our overweight person again, however we need to introduce age and sex into this now. If some one is female and between 35 and 40 years old with a BMI of 35 an excellent BF% reading would be between 15% and 23%, a good reading would be between 23% and 27%.

Now if this persons reading is more like 40%, then they are carrying way too much body fat and would be deemed a health risk. However if this persons BF% reads 25% and still a BMI of 35, this would indicate that they are carrying a lot of lean muscle and low body fat which would mean that although the BMI figure has deemed them over weight, they are a healthy kind of weight, in other words they are mostly muscle and not mostly fat.

Weight In Relation To Height Questions

I'm a 19 years old female, 121 pounds and 5 feet 1 inches, I need a plan to lose weight, or tone my body..

As said, I'm 19, 121 pounds and 5 feet 1 inches... I want to lose as much weight as I can in one month... anything from 10 to 20 pounds... Can someone give me some pointers? I would also really appreciate it if someone can tell me about some exercizes that help tone the body? I was told that I didn't need to diet but I needed to exercize to tone the body, because even though my weight is ok in relation to my height, my body is not slim, in fact; friends don't believe me when I tell them my weight, they think that i'm just talking crap. My weight also makes me look really older.. when I go out with my sister who is 5 years older, everybody thinks I'm the older sister, which is really annoying. Anyway, enough rambling, help please?

Personally, you sound fine to me. Bony girls don't attract me at all. The ideal female is a little chunky, not anorexic as it is portrayed today. However, I'll get to the point. If you want to lose any weight, you can lose maybe 5-10 pounds. You have to do heavy cardio. Meaning you have to run a lot. Your body relies on ATP for energy. After the average person runs a mile, their ATP is depleted and their body starts to rely on calories for energy. So if you run a two and a half miles nonstop, you'll burn a bunch of excess calories. This will ultimately lead to weight loss. If you want to tone up, I do not want to give you a huge complex shcedule. Just do 100 pushups a day.
