Ten unique programs for fat loss, muscle gain, and strength improvement for beginners and elite lifters. Want to get more out of your workout and spend less time in the gym? Many guys devote so many hours to lifting weight yet end up with so little to show for it. In many cases, the problem is simple: They aren’t doing exercises based on the movements their bodies were designed to do. Six basic movements—the squat, deadlift, lunge, push, pull, and twist—use all of the body’s major muscles. And, more important, they use those muscles in coordinated action, the way they were designed to work. The New Rules of Lifting , now in paperback and with more than one hundred photographs, gives you more than a year’s worth of workouts based on these six basic movements. Whether you’re a beginner, an experienced lifter looking for new challenges, or anything in between, you can mix and match the workouts to help you get bigger, stronger, and leaner. In addition, the comprehensive nutritional information provided makes The New Rules of Lifting a complete guide to reaching all your goals. If you aren’t using The New Rules of Lifting , you aren’t getting the best possible results. Read Lou Shuler's posts on the Penguin Blog.

The New Rules of Lifting For Life

The New Rules of Lifting For Life

$14.99

A customizable-and realistic-fitness program specifically created for midlifers who want to lose weight, revitalize energy, and build habits for increased longevity. Today's exercising adults are caught in a bind: Those who take it seriously and work out aggressively end up with chronic aches and pains in midlife because they don't know how to adjust their programs as they get older. And those who take it easy end up with overfed, underdeveloped bodies that don't respond well when they decide to get serious about exercise. Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove, fitness experts and authors of The New Rules of Lifting series know all too well that these readers need a program of their own. That's because they are these readers. Schuler started working out in his early teens. After forty years, he realized he couldn't do the programs in his own books without lots of modifications. And Cosgrove, a former European champion in tae kwon do, is a two- time survivor of stage IV cancer who found himself with limited endurance and a body that stubbornly refused to add muscle or shed fat. So the authors set out to create a new template for exercise, one that delivers serious results but is also flexible enough to accommodate individual limitations. The New Rules of Lifting for Life offers a six-month plan that balances total-body strength, endurance, mobility, balance, coordination, and athleticism. The workouts are challenging and, in conjunction with the suggested diet modifications, will help readers change the way their bodies look, feel, and perform. And not just temporarily- The New Rules of Lifting for Life allows you to enjoy productive and pain-free workouts for many years to come.

Weight Lifting Programs

The best weight lifting program for women is the one that is aligned with your goals. If you want a lean, sexy body, you wouldn't start doing a body builders routine and eating a huge amount to try put on bulky muscle. Let me show you the best routine for the goals you are aiming for:

Step 1. Define your goal

You want to know exactly what it is you are after. If you are not sure - just make a decision. It can always be changed later. For example, if you decide you want to lose some body fat, great. Now, have your weight taken and body fat measured and set a target.

Step 2. Choose your tools

  • If you are wanting to lose body fat, you should be doing a full body workout with weights a few times a week. Don't get afraid that you will start to put on muscle and become big and butch - unless you start eating a lot of food, you won't put on any muscle. If you focus on just bicep workouts for example, yes, you will get slightly larger muscles, but it is so hard for women to put on muscle it takes devoted female body builders up to 5 years of heavy lifting before they see measurable increases in mass.
  • If fat loss is your goal, here is the ideal workout:
  • Deadlifts
  • Back squats
  • Clean and press with light weight
  • Calf raises
  • Tucking crunches
  • Bench press

These are all the exercises you need - notice that they are all mostly compound exercises meaning they don't just target one muscle - except the ab exercise and calf raises.

If you are dead serious about losing body fat and sick of all the junk you are being fed by random people and websites, let me personally give you a hand.

I have a brand new guide to help you burn fat and get into the exact shape you want, starting NOW.

Weight Lifting Programs Questions

weight lifting programs?

hello i was wonderin i as of now work out monday through friday and do a program of chest tris back bis shoulder legs i do them each 2 times a week i was wondering if this was a good work out or should i go to a full body work out three days a week i also run everyday after the work out besides the days i do legs?

hey man, if you see results right now, and you think your not overworking yourself, and you feel good stick with it.
if you want a change, try a 2-day split. so on day 1and3 do upper body some cardio. day 2and 4 legs and core. and if you want a 5th day, go for a long run.
good luck!

Should I do the P90X program?

I am 16 years old, and have been thinking about purchasing the P90X program, but I have a few questions before I decide to buy it.

I weight lift regularly after school, and wonder if I should quit that, or can do both. I don't have that much to spend on the program, so what equipment do I NEED to get the best results? Also, do I have to get the protein bars, multivitamins, and Recovery formula to get the maximum muscle gains?

.I'm in Phase III of P90X now, and I went through it twice last year. I'll share my advice/opinion:

If you use it, stop lifting at school. The program has 3 days a week of strength training. You can add extra cardio (which is what the "doubles" program does) but I wouldn't add any strength training. If you work the program right, you won't want to lift weights more often. It'll keep you sore.

If you want a better deal (price) on the program then watch it on eBay and buy when you see it get to a price you can work with. I got a copy a little over a year ago for about $60, but it took weeks before I caught an auction that I could win at that price. However, since it's been out for a while and other programs have caught people's attention, it may well sell a little cheaper. I think it retails on Beachbody's website for about $120 with shipping.

Equipment needed: Dumbells (I got the bowflex selectechs and love them but they are expensive) or resistance bands. Every strength training workout has 1 person using the bands to show you how you can work that alternative. Dumbbells can be expensive and take up a lot of space, but I prefer them over the bands just because I know exactly what I'm pulling/lifting.

Chin up bar (I got the type that you put up in a doorway and take down when you're done)...or resistance bands. I never have been able to manage even 1 single chin up, so I mostly use the bands...that's for the back work anyway.

Yoga mat is desirable...it cushions the floor and is sticky enough so that your hands and feet don't slip. You will have occasion to use it more frequently than just on the yoga workout day.

No, you don't have to buy any of the bars, vitamins, etc. That's them trying to make extra money off of you. Simply eat right, get plenty of protein, and make sure you eat enough for all the exercise you'll be doing. For maxiumum muscle gains, talk to your school coach or someone well trained in that area so they can guide you with regard to your diet and helping you get the gains you want. As a woman, I'm working on staying lean so it's not as big an issue for me. Women can't naturally bulk up anyway.

I LOVE the program for what it is. Don't expect a body like the people on the informercials unless you've already got a really good head start. However, it is a really good program, with plenty of variety to keep you from getting bored. The workouts are about 1 hr usually, with the yoga being 90 mins I often break it into 2 workouts and do part of it in the morning and the rest in the evening.

Good luck...and Bring It!
