What to eat while pregnant as well as how much weight to gain are not the easy straightforward answers mothers-to-be are hoping to get. This is because there is such a wide range of variables that must be taken into account. There has got to be something wrong with this picture. Defensive medicine and evil intervention-prone doctors can't lay sole claim to the finger of shame. American women are eating themselves sick with an unhealthy pre-natal diet, poorly balanced pregnancy diet followed up by a postpartum diet that spirals out of control.

First things first, diet coke and pregnancy should be mutually exclusive terms and never appear in the same sentence unless it reads diet coke, or any other food item containing artificial sweetener, should never be consumed during pregnancy.

There is a laundry list of known medical conditions that are caused, exacerbated or affected by artificial sweeteners. These ill health conditions affect the mother as well as cross over the placenta into the growing fetus. Is a soda really worth the risk? No.

 

Make Changes in Your Diet Slowly

 

Second, a prenatal diet might need to undergo dramatic changes to transform into a balanced pregnancy diet espousing only the best principles of what to eat while pregnant. Pregnancy is not the time to make drastic or sudden shifts in lifestyle habits, even when they are changes for the better. Start slow.

A slow but steady approach to implement healthy eating should cut back and eventually eliminate bad foods to see lasting success. Start where you are and take each nutritional hurdle as they come. Make a list of current eating habits as compared to desirable ones. Then identify the most damaging habits on your list.

Beginning with the worst habits, eliminate them one by one. It might be easy to become discouraged; keep in mind anything worthwhile is rarely easy. What is a healthy weight for a woman who is 5'9"?

I'm 5'9" and I weigh 122lbs. Is that unhealthy?
perhaps I wasn't very clear in my question. I don't want to lose any weight.
I'm NOT trying to lose weight. I am small framed and have always been prone to be small. I wanted to know what the "average" healthy weight is for a woman my height.

Normal weight for a woman 5'9" would be between 130 and 155 pounds.

You are below that norm. Are you getting enough
protein and
calcium?
There are long term consequences of low nutrition so make sure that you are getting well balanced meals.
Do you have plenty of energy? Do you sleep well? Are you getting enough exercise: 40 - 60 minutes per day?

Weight is only one factor on the "health" scale. As a rule being a little underweight has less impact on over all health than being overweight.

30 years old, 18 weeks pregnant - 14 pounds heavier. HELP!!!!!?

This is my first pregnancy and I have been trying to be very concious about what goes into my mouth. I have absolutely NO cravings and indulge every once in a while (as I did before I was pregnant). Why the heck have I already gained this much weight? I was so used to stepping on the scale and having my weight be either the SAME or a pound or two less.. but now it's always up a pound.

I do realize every woman is different, should I just apply this to me? Because I promise you I am not eating like a cow! I eat healthy meals... nothing out of the ordinary. I told myself when I got pregnant that I wasn't going to turn into a fat pregnant woman - so I bought nutrition books for expecting women - for the most part, the meals they recommend were the meals I already eat so I haven't made any huge changes to my diet.

I am so depressed.

Ok take a deep breath! First off you are doing just fine as far as your weight gain goes. Any reasonable OBGYN will allow you to gain 1 pound a week average. Now you may gain 2 of that in 1 week, 1 then next week and another two the following week or you could gain a steady pound every week, it's always going to change. As long as it all works out to about 1 pound a week average as you go along you are doing great.

Yes every woman is different but ALL women's blood and fluid volumes drastically increase as their pregnancy goes along thus adding weight to the scale where you might think is from what you are putting in your mouth. It;s probably not your diet unless you are consuming alot of salt (makes you retain water which makes your weight temporarily go up) or are eating alot of junk - which you say you aren't. Your baby isn't quite a pound yet but will be soon enough and will make the scale go up accordingly from there too. You have to keep in mind that your uterus and placenta all play a part in what weight you've gained as well.

To give you a comparison (even though that really doesn't apply with pregnancy because each is so different) but I probably have a few more splurges than you but eat pretty healthy, get moderate exercise, and started off as a smaller plus size woman (a curvy, not fat size 14/16) am 33 years old and am 24 weeks pregnant now. I have gained 18 pounds to date. My OB is totally fine with it and says I am on track.

I get alot of leg/feet swelling which of course attributes to a bit of the gain too so I don't freak out. I just do the best I can. I plan on breastfeeding once my daughter is here so that will help with weightloss because BF'ing burns TONS of calories!!

If you are doing all you can and are still seeing the scale go up and it's upsetting you then stop weighing yourself at home. Just get weighed at your OB appts and ask the doc not to tell you what it is unless it's an issue. The more you keep your mind off of your weight then more you can actually enjoy your pregnancy!
